Ken Martin’s journey to becoming one of Australia’s most respected sculptors began far from any art school. Leaving home and school at just 14, he built a career as a shearer in South Australia’s remote Upper South-East, where long days in the shearing sheds were followed by quiet evenings sketching in basic shearers’ quarters.

Those isolated landscapes, the people who lived in them, and a lifelong connection to the Australian bush became the foundation of his artistic vision. His passion for drawing evolved into sculpting, first in stone and wood before establishing the acclaimed Constantia Furniture workshop in Port Lincoln alongside master craftsmen Bernie Koker and Malcolm Averill. Encouraged by his wife Elisa, Ken eventually pursued sculpture full-time, creating intricately carved timber works from his backyard studio that quickly gained recognition across Australia and overseas. Seeking new creative possibilities and a healthier medium, he later transitioned to bronze, a decision that would define the next chapter of his remarkable career.

Today, Ken Martin is celebrated for creating some of Australia’s most iconic public sculptures. His breakthrough commission, the life-sized bronze of three-time Melbourne Cup champion Makybe Diva on Port Lincoln’s foreshore, established him as a leading figurative sculptor and led to major commissions including the Adelaide Oval sculptures of Barrie Robran, Jason Gillespie and Darren Lehmann. With more than four decades dedicated to figurative sculpture, Ken is renowned for his extraordinary ability to capture not only anatomical accuracy but also the unique character and spirit of his subjects.

Despite his national success, he remains deeply connected to his rural roots, regularly returning to the Australian outback for inspiration. His humility, craftsmanship and respect for nature continue to shape artworks that honour remarkable people and moments, creating enduring landmarks that will inspire generations to come.

Continuing his legacy of creating meaningful public artworks, Ken Martin was commissioned by the Yalata Anangu Aboriginal Corporation Board to create the Mighty Mulloway, a striking bronze sculpture gifted to the Yalata community. Officially unveiled at the Y-Stop Yalata Roadhouse on 16 July 2026, the sculpture celebrates the region’s deep connection to Country, culture and the iconic Mulloway that has long been significant to the local community. The Board extends its sincere gratitude to Ken and his team for bringing this remarkable vision to life and creating a landmark that will be enjoyed by visitors and locals for generations.
